About this attraction

Nzulezu (also spelled Nzulezo) is a historic stilt village in the Western Region of Ghana, located about 90 kilometers west of Takoradi near the village of Beyin. Built entirely on stilts over Lake Tadane (part of the Amansuri Wetland), it is named "surface of water" in the local Nzema language. Founded between 400 and 500 years ago, tradition holds that the ancestors migrated from the ancient Ghana Empire (specifically Walata or Timbuktu). Legends hold that they were led to this haven on water by a spiritual guide in the form of a snail. The entire village consists of wooden houses and structures connected by a central walkway—essentially a "Main Street" made of wooden piers. The population of roughly 520 people lives entirely on the water. Essential facilities like a primary school, church, bar, and even a pharmacy are all on stilts. Fishing and farming are the primary livelihoods, supplemented by growing tourism.
